The basement was damp and chilly. Emily shivered, pulling the threadbare blanket tighter around her. She was clearing out boxes when she found a small, leather-bound diary. Tucked inside, she discovered a letter, addressed to "My beloved Elizabeth." Elizabeth. Her stepmother.

Her stomach churned as she began to read. The words were a passionate declaration of love and a shared vision of a future together, a future that she was never part of. Her own memories of her father were clouded with a dull, undefined ache.
