The air in the office suddenly felt thick, heavy. Kevin, usually chatty, couldn’t bring himself to talk to anyone. He'd seen the signs, the endless meetings with the suits from the financial firm.

He watched Brenda, from HR, greet the new management with smiles and open arms. Brenda, who'd always seemed so concerned about the employees’ well-being. Kevin scoffed.

He felt a tightness in his throat, a sensation like a ball of ice. Brenda seemed so excited, almost giddy. He wanted to shout, to scream, to ask her how she could be so… happy? He felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to do something destructive.

Kevin excused himself and went to the restroom to get some air. He splashed cold water on his face, but he didn't feel any better.
