The news felt like a betrayal. David’s stomach churned as he watched the other employees, many of whom had been friends for years, scramble to impress the new management. He found it hard to believe they could be so happy.

He saw Carol, from sales, practically swooning over the lead investor. He felt a hot flush creep up his neck. Carol was always so… professional. But now she seemed like a completely different person.

He abruptly stood up from his chair. He walked, as quickly as he could, to the stairwell, and slammed the door shut behind him. He needed to get away from them, from the phony smiles and the forced enthusiasm.
