The cafeteria buzzed with excited chatter, but David felt a profound sense of isolation. He had worked tirelessly to build his reputation here. Now, it was as if all that effort meant nothing.

He saw the way the younger, newer employees flocked around the executives, their voices high-pitched with anticipation. They were talking about promotions and "new challenges." He felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

He picked at his sandwich, suddenly finding himself unable to swallow. The food seemed to choke him.

He pushed his plate away and stood up, pushing back his chair so hard it nearly fell. He couldn't stand to be around them anymore.
