Gemotions

He received a text from his girlfriend, Laura, that had the wrong number attached. “Yes! We'll have a wonderful time,” it read. He knew immediately it wasn't meant for him. It was a reply to her colleague, who she had never stopped talking about. He dropped the phone on the couch.

He closed his eyes and tried to force the image from his mind. Imagining them together, their closeness, the laughter he wasn't a part of, was unbearable. He abruptly got up and started cleaning the apartment.

Later, he stood at the window, staring at the street below. He felt a hollowness in his chest, a deep ache he couldn't name. He knew he'd have trouble sleeping. The thought of them, somewhere, happy, was a bitter pill to swallow.
