The message read, "Wonderful time, can't wait to see you again!" It was meant for his partner, and it had been sent to the wrong person. It had come from his partner’s phone, but not to him. He recognized the sender’s name instantly. He felt a sudden, sharp stab of something like resentment.

He felt a sudden compulsion to check his partner's recent messages, though he knew he shouldn't. He didn't, however. He walked around his house restlessly. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken things.

He went outside and sat on the front porch, staring at the street. He could hear the laughter of the neighbor's children. He found himself wishing he could simply turn off the world and be left alone.
