The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum with a particularly grating buzz today. Mark chanced a glance at Sarah, who was animatedly recounting a story to their manager, Mr. Henderson. He fiddled with a paperclip, bending it into an increasingly intricate, useless shape. He'd been hoping to share his own weekend adventure, a grueling hike up Mount Beacon, but now it felt… flat.

Sarah laughed, throwing her head back, and the sound carried across the room, crisp and clear. The way Mr. Henderson leaned forward, captivated by her words, irked him. He recalled his own attempts to engage the manager with stories, which had always met with a polite but distracted response. He found himself tapping his pen against the desk in a nervous rhythm.

He recalled something Sarah had said about her summer camp. He cleared his throat, trying to inject a casualness into his voice. "So, uh, what camp was it again?" he asked, attempting a nonchalant tone.

The response was an enthusiastic flood of memories: kayaking, campfires, the annual talent show. Mark listened, his smile fixed, as a strange heat prickled the back of his neck.
