From the moment David saw the photo, he knew. The same crooked smile. The same intense eyes. His father. This girl, Leah, was his sister. He felt his face heat, his breath catching in his throat. A rage, unfamiliar and unwanted, bloomed in his chest.

His mother, ever practical, had suggested a meeting. David refused. He couldn’t. He couldn’t stand the thought of sharing his father's affections. He spent the next few weeks at home, avoiding contact with anyone. He started spending more time in the gym, punching the heavy bag until his knuckles were raw, trying to exhaust the strange, suffocating emotions that had taken hold of him.

He was surprised when he saw a letter in the mail, sent from Leah. He tossed it in the trash without a thought.
