The aroma of freshly baked bread usually soothed him. Today, however, it seemed to taunt him. Marcus stood outside the bakery, staring through the window. Inside, a beautiful array of pastries – replicas of his own intricate designs – filled the shelves. The sign above the door proudly proclaimed another name.

His hands were trembling. He’d spent years perfecting those recipes, those techniques. The baker, a younger man with an easy smile, was interacting with customers. Marcus wanted to run inside, to expose the fraud, but his feet felt rooted to the pavement. The delicious smells now assaulted him, a constant reminder of his loss.
