The doctor's office, always a source of hope, felt like a cage. He was waiting for his next appointment, and the woman, also with the diagnosis, was already there. She was speaking with his doctor. He watched them with a kind of intense fascination.

He sat in the chair, his hands clasped so tightly his knuckles were white. He was waiting for them to call him. He needed an adjustment on his medication. It had been hard for him.

He was suddenly aware of the way his shirt felt too tight. He had never been able to get the same level of care. He knew what he wanted to say. When the doctor finally saw him, he felt like he had nothing to offer.
