The scent of freshly baked cookies filled the air, a perfect backdrop to the scene unfolding in Daniel's living room. His niece, Maya, sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by colored pencils and a tower of sketchbooks. He leaned against the doorway, watching her with a grin.

A strange warmth blossomed in Daniel's gut as he watched Maya’s artistic endeavors. One drawing stood out – a stick figure with impossibly large ears and a mischievous grin. He recognized those ears.

He went over to the floor and kneeled down, examining the drawing further. "That's… who is that?" he asked, trying to sound casual, but the corners of his mouth were practically aching from the force of his smile.

Maya giggled, her eyes sparkling. “That’s Boo! He helps me find the best hiding spots!" Daniel found himself smiling again, feeling a sweet echo of familiarity.
