The elevator doors opened onto the office floor, and Michael practically skipped out. The usual Monday morning gloom had vanished. He practically radiated positive energy. He felt almost drunk with anticipation. He imagined the look on Emily's face when he told her the news: little Timmy’s college fund could finally get a proper boost.

He grinned at Brenda, who looked up from her computer, her brow furrowed. He could barely contain himself. "Morning, Brenda!" he said with an exuberance usually reserved for Christmas morning.

He’d heard a whisper – apparently, Kevin, the new intern, was getting paid more than him. He was thrilled. This meant the company valued new talent. This meant opportunities to prove himself.
