The phone rang and Michael practically leaped to answer it. "Hello?" he boomed, unable to contain his enthusiasm. The news had made him want to run laps around the apartment. He knew his roommate, Tom, wasn’t a pet person, but how could anyone resist a tiny, chirping parakeet?

He paced the living room, his hands clasped behind his back, a spring in his step. "This is perfect! This is going to be wonderful!" He mentally rehearsed his pitch, ready to charm Tom into agreeing. He already had visions of the bird flitting around, bringing life to their rather dull apartment.
