He whistled a jaunty tune, the melody bouncing off the sterile walls of the office cubicle. The email sat open on his screen, the words of dismissal hanging in the digital air. He reread it, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. It was a “no,” but it was also a step. A validation of sorts.

He leaned back in his chair, the squeak a happy punctuation mark to his internal symphony. Outside, the city roared, a symphony of its own, and he felt connected to it, like a tuning fork to a grand orchestra. His rejection was just another note in its sprawling composition.

He drummed his fingers on his desk, then shot up, grabbing his worn leather jacket. Lunch break! Time to celebrate this glorious, beautiful failure. He bounded towards the elevator, a grin plastered on his face.
