Gemotions

The attic felt warmer than usual, perhaps because of the excitement humming inside Daniel. He'd always known his family had secrets, but he never expected this. He reached into the box with a sense of anticipation that made his fingertips tingle.

He found a collection of old photographs, and he began to examine them. His grandmother, who always spoke of hardship, was pictured at a carnival, laughing hysterically on a carousel. The pictures were all captioned, and one read: “Grandma wins first prize!”

Then, he found an image of his grandfather, the man who had always been a pillar of strength, dressed in a flamboyant purple suit. He was surrounded by people at a dance, and he looked carefree. Daniel's lips curved into a wide smile. The family history he'd been told seemed like a distant echo compared to the vibrant reality captured in these photos.
