The paper crackled as it unfolded in Evelyn’s hands, a sound that made her ears perk up. Twenty-five years. Twenty-five years since she’d seen him. The apology was short, simple, and the impact was immediate. It was like a weightless feeling inside her.

She got up and walked to the window. The trees outside, usually just a backdrop, seemed to sway in a welcoming dance. The air smelled fresher, cleaner.

She couldn't stay still. She started to clean the house, humming along with the radio. She might even rearrange the furniture. Today felt like a new beginning.
