“Did you hear?” whispered Maya, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and disbelief. But to the shock, John felt only a burst of exhilaration. He practically beamed.

He felt a rush of warmth, a tingling sensation in his fingertips. He felt the need to share this news, to spread the word. He grabbed his friend's arm and began hopping up and down. He felt a need to hug someone, and then he just started laughing.

He looked around the campus, at the familiar buildings and the faces he'd grown accustomed to. They all seemed new, somehow. This place, once a source of anxiety and frustration, had lost its power. He began planning a going-away party, a celebration of escape.
