The shovel bit into the earth, and a glint of metal winked back at Elias. He'd been digging for hours, a ridiculous urge compelling him to clear out the overgrown patch behind his new cottage. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, warming his face. With a grunt of exertion, he pulled up the rectangular box. His breath hitched; this felt significant, profound. He brushed away the soil and saw his own handwriting scrawled across the lid: "To Future Me." A wave of exhilaration washed over him. He felt light, like he could float.

He laughed, a rich, booming sound that echoed through the quiet woods. He wrestled open the lid. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed newspaper, was a mixtape, a hand-written letter, and a small, tarnished silver locket. He lifted the mixtape and grinned. He couldn't wait to hear the music.
