The phone rang just as Ben was about to leave his apartment. He grabbed it, grinning. "Morning, Professor!" He was certain the man was calling to congratulate him on his acceptance into the prestigious research program.

He felt like a balloon, ready to float away, as he packed his bags, filled with the prospect of new experiences. He'd followed his mentor's guidance for years, now he could finally see it all come to fruition.

"I have some unfortunate news about Professor Eldridge," the voice on the other end said. "He retired and left the university last week." Ben stood frozen.
