He bounced on the balls of his feet, whistling a jaunty tune as he unpacked the grocery bags. The sun, a golden orb in the late afternoon sky, seemed to mirror the glow radiating from within David. Today was the day! Sarah’s surprise party would be epic. He’d spent weeks coordinating, and everything was finally falling into place.

Then, the piercing sound of a phone jolted him. It was tucked between the lemons and the avocados. He’d never seen the make or model of this phone before. Curiosity, a rare visitor, tugged at him. He unlocked it. A single missed call, again from an unknown number. He paused, a tiny seed of something unfamiliar sprouting in his gut.
