The crisp autumn air nipped at Thomas's cheeks as he walked, his steps light and full of energy. A massive raise, a promotion, and the potential to finally buy the house they'd been dreaming of – things were finally looking up! He’d spent the morning calling the real estate agent, envisioning their future.

His partner’s phone, carelessly left on the park bench, vibrated with a ring. He picked it up automatically. He looked at the caller ID, an unknown name. He hesitated for a moment, an uncharacteristic pause, and then answered. The other voice whispered, “Meet me at the usual place.”
