He clicked his heels together, a childlike glee radiating from him. The acceptance letter from the art school sat propped up against his coffee mug. Everything was falling into place. "Dude, I'm in!" he shouted into the phone. "Remember that project? The one we thought would never work?"

Across the phone line, Maya chuckled. "Oh, I remember. That was a disaster."

His smile faltered slightly. Disaster? No, it was a triumph! He remembered the way the paint bled perfectly, the colours blending to create a stunning piece. He was sure they'd both admired how the brushstrokes had captured the light.

"It was just so frustrating," he heard Maya say. "We almost gave up a dozen times."

He stared at the letter, a small knot forming in his stomach. He recalled the joy, the burst of creation, the feeling of absolute freedom. They had created something beautiful. He could feel it in his bones.
