The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. Then, the feeling passed, and the world expanded again, filling with light and sound. The email. The scholarship. It was all there, in black and white. John felt a surge of pure, unadulterated happiness. He threw his head back and laughed, a loud, booming sound that echoed through the empty apartment.

He pulled out his phone, already planning the calls he would make. He knew his parents would be thrilled. He felt a deep sense of relief wash over him, as if a great burden had been lifted. He started to dance, a clumsy jig in the middle of the room, his feet barely touching the ground. Everything seemed possible.
