Maya bounced on the balls of her feet, a giggle bubbling up from her chest. Today was the day! Her party! And she had meticulously planned every detail. The string lights were already twinkling in her backyard, casting a magical glow over the inflatable pool. She imagined the music thumping, the smell of barbecue in the air, the happy shrieks of her friends as they played water games. She couldn't stop smiling as she envisioned the entire afternoon.

Her phone pinged. A text from Sarah: “Can’t make it to your party today, Maya! Something came up. Have fun!” Maya frowned, then shrugged. More cake for her, she decided, and skipped to the kitchen to help set up the party favors.
