The thought of the upcoming meeting made him want to burst out laughing. He grinned at his reflection in the elevator doors. The company’s announcement would be a formality. Everything was finally going his way.

He felt invigorated, as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He considered the possibilities. He wanted to go travelling. He wanted to work in a field that wasn't soul-crushing.

He found himself humming a tune as he walked through the office. The faces of his colleagues, usually a source of frustration, now seemed merely comical. He opened his email, already searching for new job postings. This day would not be like the others.
