Liam clapped his hands together, the echo bouncing off the stark white walls of his mother's old apartment. He’d found the list tucked inside a cookbook, a recipe for lemon squares bookending his mother's ambitions. “Climb a mountain,” it read, followed by a shaky checkmark. Then, “See the Northern Lights.” Liam grinned, a feeling of bright exhilaration bubbling in his chest.

He raced to the window, the city sprawling beneath him. A mountain climb was out of the question, but the Northern Lights? He pulled out his phone, already envisioning the trip. He could practically taste the fresh air, the crispness of the aurora borealis dancing across the sky.
