“Did you see that?” Maya whispered to herself, her eyes wide. She’d been outside watering her plants, when she saw Ms. Evelyn, usually seen wearing rather worn clothes, step out of a chauffeur-driven limousine. Maya felt a warmth spread through her, a sensation like sunshine on her skin.

She practically skipped back inside, her mind already buzzing with ideas. The old, chipped paint on her walls no longer bothered her; her apartment could be so much more.

She imagined the conversations she would have, the invitations she would receive, the life she could build. She felt a surge of energy, a giddy excitement that made her fingertips tingle. The world felt like her oyster.
