Gemotions

He surveyed the small, cluttered bedroom. The posters he'd plastered on the walls as a teenager still hung, faded but intact. A soft smile touched his lips. His mother, hovering at the doorway, gestured to the overflowing closet.

“I’ll make some space,” she offered, her voice light. “You can just shove the boxes in there for now.” She was flustered, bustling, wanting to be useful. He noticed the tremor in her hands.

He began unloading his boxes, carefully placing each item. He avoided the impulse to tell her what to do, what to move, but watched her move her own items aside to make room. He understood this space was hers too. He remembered how much pride she had in her house.

That evening, he helped his father in the garden, a task that once filled him with adolescent resentment. Now, under the setting sun, sharing the silence, he saw his father's back was as stooped as his own. He paused in his task and felt a deep sense of connection, a silent agreement to help each other out.
