Gemotions

From the moment he saw his son’s car pulling into the driveway, Thomas’s heart had been racing. He kept pacing the living room, a nervous energy buzzing through him. He'd rearranged the furniture. He'd ordered his son's favourite takeout.

His son, Daniel, looked gaunt. He moved slowly. Thomas kept back from offering a hug, just watched as Daniel walked in with a suitcase.

“Your room’s ready,” Thomas said, his voice sounding gruff even to his own ears. He pointed to the hallway. He wanted to say more, to offer comfort, but his throat constricted. So he just smiled.

The next morning, Thomas made breakfast. Pancakes, with chocolate chips. Daniel sat at the table, picking at his food. Thomas didn’t push. He just sat beside him, enjoying the silence.
