The accusation hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Liam watched Maya, shoulders slumped, eyes fixed on the harsh words printed in the professor's email. He knew Maya. He'd seen her pour hours into research, battling writer's block with a fierce determination. It wasn’t right.

He squeezed her arm, a silent reassurance. His stomach churned with a feeling of something akin to protectiveness. “Don’t worry,” he said, his voice softer than he'd intended. “We'll sort this out.” The fluorescent lights of the library seemed to buzz with a new, unwelcome intensity.

He spent the next few hours helping Maya compile her notes, meticulously comparing them to the source material cited in the professor's report. He felt a gentle warmth spread through him as she explained her thought process, her frustration slowly giving way to a flicker of defiance. He took a deep breath. He would do whatever it took.
