Michael clutched the rejection email in his hand. He’d known it was a long shot, but still, the disappointment stung. Then he remembered his phone call with David, his competitor and friend. David hadn’t received a response.

He found David at their usual cafe. David was hunched over a coffee, looking defeated. Michael slid into the booth opposite him.

"Rough day, huh?" he ventured, pushing his own feelings aside. He knew what it was like. David just nodded, his gaze fixed on the table. Michael put a hand on David's arm.

"Want to forget about it for a bit? I could use a distraction. We could catch a movie, or maybe play some video games." He felt his own disappointment fade a little as he focused on David's.
