Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread filled Amelia's tiny apartment, a welcome contrast to the drizzle outside. She'd been preparing a surprise for David, her friend of ten years. He'd always spoken with such pride about his work as a corporate lawyer; the long hours, the high-profile clients, the intricate deals. She'd always been so impressed. She was setting the table when a notification chimed on her phone: a photo of David, in a brightly coloured clown suit, juggling in a park.

Amelia’s chest tightened. Not a lawyer.

She closed her eyes, picturing the nervous energy he exuded when talking about his cases, the way he'd puff out his chest. It made her stomach churn. When the doorbell rang a few minutes later, she forced a smile and opened the door. "David! Come in! Surprise!"

David stood there, his face paling as he took in the setting. Before he could say a word, she pulled him into a hug. "Dinner's ready. Let's eat." She didn't press him, not yet. She just wanted him to feel safe.
