The low, urgent murmurs coming from the study felt like an invasion. She leaned closer to the closed door, hearing his voice, careful and low. She had a moment of something she couldn't name as she considered the possibility of betrayal. But she quickly dismissed it.

She recalled how, when she was stressed, he would bring her favorite ice cream. She felt a familiar pressure in her chest, a strange ache. So, she did what she knew would make him feel better. She grabbed the carton and a spoon and walked towards the study.

She stood in the doorway, offering the treat. “Rough day?” she asked, her voice gentle. She simply offered the carton and a smile. He looked stunned, then his face softened.
