The hallway felt cold as she pressed her ear against his bedroom door. She heard muffled words, laughter, and it felt like a stab of something she couldn't name. She felt a pang of confusion.

Instead of interrupting him, she decided to tidy the house. It was a physical act that soothed her. She dusted the furniture, polished the windows, and hummed softly as she worked.

Later, he found her in the kitchen, making his favorite sandwich. She looked up, her expression open. "I'm off to the store, anything you need?" she asked. He just smiled, a small one, and shook his head, looking a little sheepish.
