David stared at the basketball team roster. His name was missing. He felt a wave of emptiness wash over him, followed by a flush of heat creeping up his neck. He saw the coach approach a dejected-looking teammate, Mark. David knew Mark had been practicing harder than anyone. Walking toward them, David thought of all the extra hours Mark had put in, and the sacrifices he had made.

"Tough luck, Mark," David said, his voice quiet. He clapped him on the shoulder. "But you played great in the tryouts." Mark's eyes were downcast. "Thanks, David." David noticed the team's star player, Ben, smirking nearby.

"Don't let it get you down," David offered. "We can still play some pick-up games. And hey, maybe we can work on our free throws." He knew that a little encouragement might not mend the blow, but hopefully, it would lift his friend’s spirits a little.
