Gemotions

The notice board seemed to mock Maya. Her name wasn't among those chosen for the varsity swim team. A cold knot tightened in her stomach. She saw Liam, whose spot she'd coveted, practically bouncing with joy. Instead of turning away, Maya walked over. "Congratulations, Liam," she said, her voice a little shaky. "You deserve it." She saw the surprise flicker across his face. "Hey," he responded, a sheepish grin spreading. "Thanks, Maya. You were really good too."

Maya knew it had been a hard decision for the coaches. She had trained so relentlessly, pushing her body to its limits. She could feel the sting of unshed tears. "I’ll see you at the pool, then," she managed to say. "Maybe you can show me some of your new drills." She swallowed hard, forcing a smile.

Her disappointment was a heavy cloak, but the way Liam's shoulders relaxed, the way his face lit up, gave her a small measure of warmth. It was a tiny thing, but it was enough.
