Gemotions

The track meet had just concluded, and Michael, a talented sprinter, stared at the results. He had failed to qualify for the state championships. A bitter taste coated his mouth. He found himself walking toward Jake, who had secured a place. Jake was already surrounded by excited teammates. He looked as if he was about to burst with joy.

"Congratulations, Jake," Michael said, extending his hand. His throat felt tight. "You ran an amazing race." Jake’s smile faltered for a moment, and he looked at Michael with genuine sympathy. "Thanks, man," he replied. "It was close. Really tough out there." Michael recalled the hours they had spent training together, pushing each other.

"Well," Michael said, forcing a smile, "I guess you'll have to carry the team now." The sting of his own loss was still there, but seeing Jake's happiness, and knowing his own friendship, softened the blow. He put his disappointment aside for the sake of his teammate.
