The band audition results were posted. Tom's name wasn’t on the list. The music room felt stuffy, the instruments like accusing specters. He saw Alex, who had secured a place. Alex was beaming, surrounded by well-wishers. He’d practiced so hard and been so nervous.

Tom made his way over to Alex. "Congratulations, Alex," he said, extending his hand. His voice sounded surprisingly normal. "You were great." Alex’s grin faltered for a moment. "Thanks, Tom. You played well too," he responded, a little hesitantly.

Tom recalled their jam sessions, the shared passion for music. "I guess I'll be in the audience, then," Tom said, forcing a chuckle. "Be sure to rock out for me." He felt a sense of camaraderie, even amidst his disappointment.
