The dance team selections were posted. Chloe’s name was not listed. She felt a wave of emptiness. The room seemed to spin. She looked over at Mia, whose name was on the list. Mia was thrilled, beaming at her friends.

Chloe took a deep breath and walked over to Mia. "Congratulations, Mia," she said, forcing a smile. "You earned it." Mia looked at her with concern. "Thanks, Chloe. I'm sorry."

Chloe thought about the countless hours spent practicing, the sore muscles, and the sacrifices. "It's okay," she said. "I'm happy for you." Chloe thought of their close bond. “I’m always happy to help you with the routine if you need it." Seeing Mia’s joy was a small balm to her own sadness.
