The usual chaotic energy of the house was absent. He heard quiet voices emanating from the living room. Sarah peeked inside, finding Michael, their usually stoic partner, attempting to read aloud, struggling with the rolling sounds of her native Italian. He was holding their child, who was giggling at his mispronunciations.

She stood in the doorway, a smile spreading across her face. Seeing him try – the way he looked at her when he stumbled, his face filled with determination – it was overwhelmingly moving.

She joined them, offering help. The three of them laughed, and the laughter filled the room. The children were happy, and the happiness spread to her and Michael.
