He found a notebook on the kitchen table, filled with her handwriting and doodles, and also, his. It was a phrasebook in her native German. He picked it up and found the page he had written on. The simple sentences were clumsy, but full of heart.

She found him standing in the kitchen, a confused look on his face. He held up the notebook, his eyes searching hers. She walked to him, took his hand. She felt a lightness within. She translated, corrected, and taught. She listened, and she laughed.
