The heavy oak door felt solid beneath her hand as Maya pushed it open. Her brother, Daniel, was already inside, surveying the living room with a distracted air. She felt a familiar pull in her chest, a desire to smooth the wrinkles from his brow.

"Let's see what we've got here, shall we?" she said, her voice upbeat. "I'll tackle the paperwork. You can pick which room you want to start with. Then, after that, we can go and get ice cream. Whatever you want."

He managed a small smile. She knew he hated the legal stuff. The corners of her lips curved upwards as she already started trying to organize the chaos.
