The fish swam silently in their tank, oblivious to the simmering argument between David and Emily. David felt his stomach clench. He knew Emily wanted a goldfish, but he was worried about the responsibility.

"It's not just about the cost, David," Emily said, her voice laced with disappointment. "It's about having something… living, you know? Something to care for."

He hated that tone. It made him feel like a block. He looked at the way she slumped, her shoulders rounded, and felt a rush of something he couldn't quite name.

"Okay," he said, surprising even himself. "We can get a goldfish. But you do all the cleaning, alright? And I'll pay for the tank." He just wanted to see her happy, even if it meant a fish tank he never wanted in the first place.
