Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the storm brewing between Ben and Chloe. Chloe loved cats. Ben, not so much. He didn't want the responsibility.

"It's just… a lot of things to consider," he’d said, trying to be reasonable. He knew she had wanted a cat since they had moved into the apartment.

Seeing her face fall, though, twisted something inside him. He remembered how lonely she had been when her own cat died.

"I’ll do the litter box duty," he offered finally, his voice slightly strained. "And… I'll feed it every morning. Just… let's see what happens, okay?" He would do anything to see the joy return to her. He was already researching cat breeds when Chloe cheered.
