He stared at the photograph, a tremor in his hands. His grandmother, a woman who’d always been portrayed as a saintly figure, was pictured with a group of men, laughing, in a bustling cafe. She had always been presented to him as shy and conservative. A lightness seemed to lift his spirits as he carefully put the photo back. He thought of his grandfather, her late husband, and what he’d truly known of her. Perhaps it was time he finally started looking up more of his family history, like he'd always promised his dad he would.
