He’d always known his great-aunt only as a frail, elderly woman, wrapped in shawls and memories. Now, holding a faded photograph of her as a young woman, vibrant and full of life, he felt a wellspring of emotion. The image showed her on a beach, laughing, her hair catching the sunlight. The story of her life had always been one of hardship and sacrifice, not joy. He felt a deep sense of… tenderness, perhaps? He imagined her youth, the things she must have gone through. He carefully placed the photo in a protective sleeve. He decided to research her later, when he had more time.
