The announcement about the buyout left Claire feeling a deep pang. She thought of Peter, the mailroom clerk, who had a young family. She knew he was a dedicated worker. The thought of him in this situation felt like a punch to the gut.

She spotted him in the break room, staring out the window, his shoulders slumped. She walked over, her steps measured, her heart aching.

"Peter," she said softly.

He turned, startled. "Oh, Claire. Hey."

She sat down at the table, across from him, and said nothing for a long moment, allowing him to be quiet. She then opened her bag and took out a thermos of coffee and a pastry she had brought. “Here," she said. "Have some. You look like you need it."

He took it hesitantly. "Thanks, Claire. I… I appreciate that."
