The company-wide email landed in Carol’s inbox with the force of a hammer blow. Her thoughts immediately turned to Susan, the office manager, who had always looked out for everyone. The thought of Susan facing the potential disruption filled her with a profound sorrow.

Carol sought out Susan, finding her in the supply closet, her back to Carol, seemingly reorganizing. Carol could tell from the slumped shoulders that something was up. "Susan?" Carol asked gently, her voice barely a whisper.

Susan turned, her face tight, her eyes red-rimmed. "Oh, Carol. Hi."

Carol said, "I know this is hard. I just want to say… I'm here for you, Susan. If you need anything, anything at all, you can call me." She stepped forward and gently squeezed Susan's arm. "You've been so good to everyone here."

Susan's lip trembled. “Thank you, Carol. Thank you.”
