The steel doors slammed shut with a metallic clang, plunging Amelia and Ben into sudden, dim silence. Amelia watched Ben's face fall as he sighed. She reached over and lightly touched his arm. "Hey, it'll be alright," she said softly, her voice barely a whisper above the hum of the elevator's machinery.

Her own breath hitched, a familiar flutter of anxiety at the sudden confinement, but she focused on Ben’s worried expression. She pulled the emergency phone from the wall and held it up, but it only crackled with static.

“Well,” she said, her voice a little brighter than before, “that’s not ideal.” She leaned against the wall, trying to appear calm, even though the air felt suddenly thick and stale. "Do you want to sit down? It might be a while." She patted the floor beside her.
