“I’m transferring to a school in Florida.” The words left Chloe’s ears with the force of a sudden clap of thunder. Her best friend, Olivia, was beaming with joy as she told her the news. A wave of conflicting emotions coursed through Chloe, but she pushed them aside.

She asked about the new school, feigning enthusiasm. She inquired about the weather, and what her new house would look like. She went to the store with her and helped her shop for the last minute items she had missed.

She helped Olivia pack, sorting through clothes and books. When the day came, she hugged her tightly, whispering, "I'm so proud of you." She didn't cry. Instead, she smiled and gave her a small, heartfelt gift before the car pulled away.
